Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez from UT Health San Antonio has been named to join the U.S. Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Long COVID.

The only Texan serving on the 14-member panel according to the UT Health San Antonio press release issued on Tuesday.

In her new job Verduzco-Gutierrez is expected to assist with the research of the long-term effects of COVID further, and will help to develop national strategies to deal with COVID-19’s long-term impacts on patients.

“Long COVID” refers to COVID-19 cases in which symptoms of the virus persist for several days or even months following the first infection. Though most people recover from COVID-19 after several weeks, a handful of patients experience persistent signs and symptoms long after the virus has gone away from their bodies.

Verduzco-Gutierrez serves currently as the chairperson for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, which is where she oversees the multidisciplinary COVID long-term clinic.

She is also head for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Line at University Health and is the medical director of rehabilitation in Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospitals.

She was previously as a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine which is a Congress-chartered organization which in the past year came up with a global workable description of Long COVID.

“It is truly an honor to be involved in this federal advisory committee on long COVID,” she wrote in the announcement. “This provides an opportunity for those who interact with the public to offer collective guidance to Secretary of Health on long-term COVID. It would be wonderful to provide my viewpoint as a doctor-researcher who cares for patients suffering from long COVID as well as other chronic infections.”
